What is a Location QR Code?

A Location QR code encodes a geo:latitude, longitude coordinate. Scanning opens the user’s default mapping app—Google Maps, Apple Maps, or similar—showing the precise point or enabling directions.

How Location QR Codes work

QRUpp encodes your location using the geo: URI scheme. When scanned, the phone’s map app opens directly to that coordinate, allowing users to view or navigate instantly.

Create a Location QR Code in QRUpp

  1. Log in to your account and click Links in the left hand menu, then Create Link.
  2. Select Location at the top of the page.
  3. Enter a meaningful name for your QR code.
  4. Enter the Latitude and Longitude of the location.
  5. Choose the style, colours, frame, foreground/background images, and optional logo.
  6. The preview updates in real time as you adjust settings.
  7. Click Generate to save your QR code.
  8. Download as SVG, PNG, JPG, or WEBP or print to hard copy or PDF.

Tip: To find Latitude and Longitude, open Google Maps, right‑click (or tap‑and‑hold) the spot, then choose What’s here? The coordinates appear at the bottom; click to copy.

Alternatively in Apple Maps, tap and hold to drop a pin, swipe up on the place card, and copy the coordinates shown.

Best uses

  • Event locations: make it easy for guests to find your venue.
  • Outdoor areas: trailheads, campsites, photo points.
  • Delivery sites: construction or temporary addresses.
  • Exhibitions or pop‑ups: precise map pin without a full address.
  • Service points: car parks, drop‑off zones, collection points.

Tips for accuracy

  • Verify your coordinates in both Google Maps and Apple Maps.
  • Avoid rounding—keep 5+ decimal places for precision.
  • Include short signage text (e.g., “Scan for Directions”).
  • Test on iOS and Android to ensure the correct map opens.
  • Print at 25–35 mm minimum for reliable scanning.

Location QR Code: FAQs

Yes. Most map apps require an active internet connection to load the map, calculate routes, and show live directions.

Most smartphones open Location QR codes in their default maps app, such as Google Maps or Apple Maps. On desktop, the link typically opens a map view in the browser.

The QR code itself encodes the coordinates, but your printed material can (and should) include an address or place name so people know where the link leads.

geo: links don’t support analytics directly. If you need scan tracking, use a Dynamic URL that redirects to your map URL so you can see when and where scans occur.
